Our guide to practicing mindfulness on the slopes

Whether you’re a newbie on the slopes or you’re a seasoned skier, for many, hitting the slopes is a chance to connect with nature and practice mindfulness. Mindful skiing is a practice that combines all the thrill of skiing with the principles of mindfulness.

Incorporating mindfulness into your ski holiday can help you get more out of your ski trip and work to form a deeper connection with yourself and nature.

These are all our tips and tricks on how you can practice mindfulness on your next ski holiday.

Be Intentional

Before you get out there, you might want to consider setting your intentions for the day. Intention setting is a common practice in the mindfulness world and it’s an easy one to include in your routine before you strap in your skis.

Think about asking yourself what you want to gain from your ski day, is it to improve your technique or just to be out in nature? Having clear intentions set before you start is a great way to practice mindfulness from the get-go.

Connect with Nature

Skiing is one of the best ways to immerse yourself in the beauty of the mountains and you want to make sure you are taking time to appreciate the beauty of your surroundings as you ski. Try to take notice of the natural world around you in ways you may not have before.

Allow yourself to be fully present in the moment and really take in all the sights, smells and sounds around you whilst you head down the slopes.

Focus on Breathing

One of the other key mindful practices is focusing on your breathing. Try to be mindful of the rhythm of your inhales and exhales as a way to be present in the moment.

Focusing on your breathing and your breath patterns allows you to be more calm, clear-headed and present in the moment during your ski session.

Practice Gratitude

Take time to really be grateful during your ski day. Whether you are grateful to be out on the slopes, grateful for the weather, grateful to be around loved ones or something else entirely, practicing gratitude is a key principle of mindfulness.

Take Breaks to Reflect

It can be easy to get caught up in the excitement of your ski day so taking breaks specifically to reflect can be a great way to remain mindful throughout the craziness of your day on the slopes.

Take time to stop at scenic lookouts or find a secluded spot to sit and reflect on your day. Use this time to check in with yourself, ask yourself how you’re feeling physically and mentally and take a moment to realign with your intentions for the day.

Look Back on Your Experience

As your ski day comes to an end, it can be easy to feel like you just didn’t get enough time on the slopes. Instead of focusing on the more negative aspects of your day, take a moment to reflect on the day’s events in a more positive light.

What moments stand out? What did you learn? What was the day’s high point? By taking the time to reflect on your overall experience you can gain valuable insights into yourself and learn important lessons you can carry with you to your next ski adventures.
